Checking in

It has been quite a while since I have added a new post. The new year has started off with many new assignments on the horizon, and has been just as busy as the end of the year proved to be, along with some interesting subjects.

In the past couple of months I have photographed Freedome Bradley-Ballentine, the Old Globe’s new director of arts engagement and Willy Wonka leading a family 5k at the San Diego County Administration Building. Then, there was a stop off at the Fall Brewing Company in North Park and beer and food pairings at Abnormal Beer at The Cork & Craft restaurant, in Rancho Bernardo. Then I met Ori Talmon, a composer of contemporary classical music, and bartender Eric Johnson of Juniper and Ivy, who was named Discover San Diego’s Bartender of the Year, Violinist Karen Gomyo, at Copley Symphony Hall, the dedication of the new Sator Hall science building at Point Loma Nazarene University, and the Hmong New Year celebration in Kearny Mesa. Nothing beats variety!

Here are a few of the images from some of my last assignments and portraits.

Sator Hall and Latter Hall Dedication

More than 20 years in the making, Point Loma Nazarene University dedicated its new science complex, Sator Hall and Latter Hall, on their Point Campus in San Diego. The building facade is a stainless-steel wall with alpha and omega cutouts symbolizing the intersection of science and faith. The screen also serves a practical function of reflecting heat while allowing natural light to pass through. It is a truly remarkable building.

U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge

Members of the “Archisand” team, from Laguana Hills, compete in the Cool California Carvers Class (9 teams of 3 professionals each carving for 2 days), are busy early on Sunday morning carving away on San Diego’s B street Pier. The U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge organizers brought in some 300 tons of sand to the ‘B’ Street cruise ship terminal pier.

In another class, World Master Sand Sculptors have come from Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands and Canada, and elsewhere to challenge the best in the U.S. Eleven master sculptors carved for 4 days and created beautiful three-dimensional art, some of which weighed in at over 10 tons.

The Ocean

Because it has been so “warm” lately, I am especially thankful for the ocean, its gentle cooling breeze and the smell of salt water…

A nice sunset doesn’t hurt either.

ComiCon in the Gaslamp Quarter

A wee bit of street photography during ComiCon. What a crazy scene! Loved seeing all of the costumes, visitors, attendees, and locals just coming down to catch a glimpse of the madness. And, what an absolutely splendid day, can’t beat the weather in San Diego.

Big Bay Boom! July 4th Fireworks

I am a big fan of fireworks!

Generally, I just like to observe from my neighborhood and not deal with the traffic, but this year I scoped out a cool spot and photographed San Diego’s Big Bay Boom. And it was awesome!

Cinco de Mayo

Logan Height’s Ballet Folkforico Libertad performed on the Fiesta de Reyes stage as thousands flocked to Old Town on Saturday to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in San Diego’s oldest, historic neighborhood. The annual Fiesta Old Town Cinco de Mayo celebrated 32 years of tradition and was transformed into the largest Cinco de Mayo celebration north of the border, filled with dancers, mariachis, cervezas, great food, and activities for all ages. The Fiesta featured four stages with live entertainment, over 40 bands, including vibrant, traditional ballet folklorico performances, lively beer and margarita gardens and of course, Low Rider Lane!
