This Mission Hills garden is featured in the SD Horticultural Society/San Diego Floral Society combined garden tour, which is linked to the Balboa Park Centennial. The garden is a mature garden and generally is in full bloom by May. The garden was designed by Sinjen, well-known late landscape designer, who is known for having trees beautifully laced out. The family also converted a former playhouse into a chicken coup, now home to 5 chickens.

Skating by the Sea
Locals and visitors alike enjoy ice skating at Skating by the Sea, which returned to Hotel del Coronado for the 10th year from Thanksgiving day through January 4, 2015. I was fortunate to have a bird’s eye view from the renown turret of the Hotel Del, with the help of Jessica from hotel’s concierge desk. She was an awesome guide. Did I mention that a portion of the skating proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of San Diego. So let’s do some skatin’!
False Point Tide Pools, La Jolla
We should all be good stewards of our environment. I really admire people who make an effort to learn about their environment and who love to explore and discover the diversity of San Diego County.
On a recent afternoon, I headed out to photograph a “tide pool adventure” with the naturalists of the Birch Aquarium who were hosting their outdoor classroom at the False Point Tide Pools in La Jolla.
Winter is the best time of the year for tide pooling because low tides are generally earlier in the day, allowing enthusiasts ample light to discover local coastal sea life. Participants and photographers enjoyed warm temperatures and a shoreline bathed in beautiful late afternoon light.
Scripps Pier Moonlight Walk
The Scripps Institution of Oceanography invites San Diegans to attend the Moonlight Pier Walks which take place on the pier during the summer months. The walk allowed attendees a tour of the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier, which is usually closed to the public. The pier is used by scientists, students and aquarium staff for a variety of research projects. It also serves as a platform to collect local marine life and deploy small boats and oceanographic instruments.
Brazilian Carnaval at the Bahia
Ali McNeil and her Brazilian dancing and musician friends of Sol E Mar take the stage on Thursday nights this summer at the Bahia Resort Hotel on Mission Bay. Great food and great entertainment!
Yoga on the USS Midway
Scripps Health and the Downtown San Diego Partnership have teamed up to launch “Healthy Living in the City,” a wellness initiative that encourages people to explore Downtown and its healthy lifestyle options. To kick off this year-long initiative, Scripps Health and the Downtown Partnership sponsored the inaugural “Stretch Yourself with Scripps” yoga class on the flight deck of the USS Midway. Amy Caldwell (foreground), of Yoga One, a popular Downtown yoga studio, guided participants through the free hour-long class. See it in the San Diego Union Tribune.
Old Town State Park, Stagecoach Days
There was lots of fun during San Diego’s Old Town State Park’s celebration of Stagecoach Days. The events takes place weekends throughout the 2014 summer season. This weekend’s events featured 19th century games and amusements including egg, wheel barrow and potato sack races. The theme of this year’s celebration is “The West on the Move.” Live musics and lot’s of free activities drew locals and visitors alike.
Surf Dog Competition, Imperial Beach
Who knew dogs could surf! The 2013 Loews Surf Dog Competition got off to a roaring start on Saturday June 22, 2013. The waves were rougher than usual, but our fine four legged-friends didn’t let that deter them from riding the waves.
