I love surprises!

About a week ago, I had an assignment to photograph Sandra and Valerie, who are with the Guardian Scholars program. I arrived at the location, a home, that was under construction.

As I walked up, I admit, I panicked. I could see inside, and the interior was in complete disarray. The furniture was huddled in the middle of the expansive living room, and there were construction materials everywhere. There was really no suitable area with a nice background for a studio lit portrait.

Valerie then suggested the idea of an outside location, for which I did not hold much hope… But, to my astonishment, from the rear of the home, there was a beautiful view of Lake Miramar.

A hidden gem! The small rolling hills and lake, caressed in the late afternoon sunlight, created a gorgeous painting-like backdrop for my subjects, and I couldn’t have been happier!

False Point Tide Pools, La Jolla

We should all be good stewards of our environment. I really admire people who make an effort to learn about their environment and who love to explore and discover the diversity of San Diego County.

On a recent afternoon, I headed out to photograph a “tide pool adventure” with the naturalists of the Birch Aquarium who were hosting their outdoor classroom at the False Point Tide Pools in La Jolla.

Winter is the best time of the year for tide pooling because low tides are generally earlier in the day, allowing enthusiasts ample light to discover local coastal sea life. Participants and photographers enjoyed warm temperatures and a shoreline bathed in beautiful late afternoon light.

Scripps Pier Moonlight Walk

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography invites San Diegans to attend the Moonlight Pier Walks which take place on the pier during the summer months. The walk allowed attendees a tour of the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier, which is usually closed to the public. The pier is used by scientists, students and aquarium staff for a variety of research projects. It also serves as a platform to collect local marine life and deploy small boats and oceanographic instruments.

Yoga on the USS Midway

Scripps Health and the Downtown San Diego Partnership have teamed up to launch “Healthy Living in the City,” a wellness initiative that encourages people to explore Downtown and its healthy lifestyle options. To kick off this year-long initiative, Scripps Health and the Downtown Partnership sponsored the inaugural “Stretch Yourself with Scripps” yoga class on the flight deck of the USS Midway. Amy Caldwell (foreground), of Yoga One, a popular Downtown yoga studio, guided participants through the free hour-long class. See it in the San Diego Union Tribune.
